Each team, regardless of finishing position in any sport, will receive ONE end-of-season contract drop per sport without incurring a 25% cap hit on the remainder of the contract. This feature can only be used in the designated offseason period of the particular sport in which the drop is occurring. All in-season drops will still accrue a 25% hit on the remaining contract, and previously dropped contracts are not eligible for the free drop.
Beginning with all contracts signed in the 2017 NFL season (and all seasons and sports thereafter), the free contract drop can only be used to buy out the last year of a contract. Contracts signed before the 2017 NFL season are exempt from this rule and are eligible for the free drop no matter how many years remain on the contract.
Any player who passes away is automatically released from their contract with no penalty to the cap. Players who announce retirement are NOT granted an automatic release.
