Proposal: In addition to the newly adopted rule that teams are only allowed to use one drop per sport, teams are only allowed to use a drop on a player entering the final year of their contract. This ensures that a team that signs a lengthy bad contract is "punished" until the final season.
To be entirely transparent, the reason that the free drops were included during league creation was to hopefully get more talent circulating through free agency. Now as the league matures I've found that we have plenty of quality players available each free agency period anyways (and will only continue to increase as the league ages), and including these "mulligans" goes against the idea of a salary league. I am in favor of keeping some form of free drop, but a severely limited form of the system we have been using.
As always, feel free to discuss.

Holy crap. These rules are just killing me. Seems like every rule is against the backloaded contracts I signed. I wish I knew these were gonna be in play when I signed those players.

I agree John, these rules probably do affect you a bit more than most of the other owners (not intentional, by the way lol).
Perhaps we could grandfather this rule* in (if approved), giving teams an extra year given that these drops previously had very little limitation and do play a part in the bidding process.
* - Amendment #1 will go into full effect with the 2017 NFL season

Just some feedback - I'm with everything St Louis & Syracuse posted. Real GM have to learn how to eat contracts or don't offer them, "("mulligans" goes against the idea of a salary league)". I think this is a good rule for the future of the league but should be put in place after past contracts are filled. Rules changes shouldn't punish GM for following the rules when the contracts were offered.
I think the drops should only be for new owners only for their 1st year. (example this season - dropping players with $1 contracts because owner hasn't used them during the season and wanted to use them up).

I agree with this rule in principle, however I am voting against it at this time. I don't feel a player should be punished for contracts made under a previous rule. If this was tweeked a little, like take effect in 2020 when most current contracts have expired or some sort of salary re-negotiation keeping the same average but evening out was available, then I would change my vote, but as currently purposed I am against.

I have voted in favour. I am not a fan of backloaded contracts, but however, I do agree with everyone that says that managers should not be punished for something that was within the rules at the time of doing so. That would strike me as unfair. So whilst I have voted in favour, if this was to be put in place straight away and not "grandfathered" in, then I would change my vote. I should add that this is in no way because I have backloaded contracts I would like to get rid of, because I don't.

I agree that this is only fair if we grandfather the rule in. If adopted, this rule will not be in effect for current contracts, only contracts signed beginning with the 2017 NFL season.
Please alter/keep your votes accordingly

The proposal has been accepted. Existing contracts will be grandfathered in and this ruling will not apply to them
