First and foremost, I’d like to thank the commissioner for the opportunity to join this challenging, unique league, and for the opportunity to move this franchise to a burgeoning sports city like Washington, D.C. I’d further like to thank all the other franchises for their welcome to the league, and I look forward to our competition moving forward.
To the people of Washington, D.C., let it be known that we intend to build a strong, four-sport powerhouse that provides competitive, entertaining teams on an annual basis. With that said, there are some challenges that only time can heal with the current state of the franchise. With that, here’s our state of the franchise report, sport by sport.
Basketball: This sport appears to face the largest number of challenges, with cap space nearly maxed out and an underperforming roster. Know that our goal is to find our way to be a competitive basketball franchise within 2-3 years. With that said, expect our management team to be proactive in seeking out deals that will move players we don’t anticipate will fit that window and will provide us an opportunity to build toward that goal. While the basketball franchise may not be a key competitor in the market yet, we have a plan and will begin work to implement it before this year’s trade deadline.
Hockey: As you can see from our initial moves, we believe this team is underperforming but still good enough to make a competitive playoff run. Our efforts to acquire Sidney Crosby and goalies who will build our capabilities demonstrate our commitment to go for it when we think a team has the ability to compete. We see this team as capable of being competitive for the foreseeable future, and will continue to rebuild the farm while being aggressive in maintaining a formidable team on the ice.
Football: It is clear by the amount of cap space available and the fact this team has the top pick, there is a lot of work to do to build this into the type of competitor this city deserves. That said, if we retain that top pick, we will go with the best talent available and find a cornerstone player around which to build. But we will also keep an open mind about the potential of sending that pick out, in an effort to gain additional opportunities to build talent in both the football and basketball leagues, long-term.
Baseball: Anyone who knows our ownership group knows this team will be a particular area of interest. With significant cap room and a group of sound prospects, ownership believes this team should be able to compete now and in the future. We anticipate it will be a fun summer in the nation’s capital.
Once again, our ownership group is happy to be a part of this league and this franchise, and we look forward to building an entertaining product on the field, court, and rink, while helping to develop our city and league ties.
