The 2020 MLB season is in the books, and with it the most unusual fantasy season that has ever occurred. After our NHL and NBA seasons got cut short before we could get through our playoffs, the usual marathon of an MLB season was shorter than any other sport. That short season led to some extremely high variance, as teams that were likely expected to be at or near the top of the standings cratered early with no time to recover, while rebuilding teams (including my own) outperformed all expectations and made a playoff run. There was one thing that stayed the same, though, and that was the Pensacola Pelicans taking home an MLB championship in an even-numbered year for the third consecutive time. The championship propelled the Pelicans to a tie with Dallas for 3rd place in the final 2019/20 league standings. The surprising postseason appearance, and subsequent deep run to the finals, ended up propelling the Sting past Montana for the overall season championship despite not winning a single title during the year. At the back of the pack we had a second consecutive sub-par showing from the New Jersey Haze, who held serve as one of the most dominant franchises in the league through the first four seasons. Just ahead of the Haze were the Las Vegas Strips, one of those previously mentioned teams that was expected to have a legitimate shot at an MLB title but instead ended up at the bottom of the standings.
As for the all-time league standings update, the Grizz unsurprisingly maintain their mantle as the team to beat. The Sting jumped ahead of the Warriors for second place in what has long been a back-and-forth battle. Dallas made up ground on Norwich for the 4th spot, and the Haze continued their slide down to a tie for 6th with the Pelicans who have come on extremely strong the past 3 years after being a bottom-feeder for quite some time. After that there is a HUGE gap between the Haze/Pelicans and the next teams, Dawgs and Patriots, tied as well. The Wings made very little progress after their dominant NHL season and fall back to battling the Strips for the bottom position. In all there wasn't a ton of movement following the MLB season, and some very clear tiers have emerged to this point in league history.
