The 2021 NFL season kicked off our 8th season of 4-Sport Mayhem and, from the opening kickoff, the Las Vegas Strips separated themselves from the rest of the league. Vegas cruised through the regular season with only one loss and a nearly 200 point lead as the top scoring team, made even more impressive by the fact that the Strips lost Derrick Henry at the halfway point and Saquon Barkley a shell of his former self. The heavily favored Strips suffered a major scare in the semi-finals against a determined Dawgs squad as they narrowly squeaked out a 4 point victory. It was business as usual in the finals, though, with a 229 point drubbing of the Sting to claim a much deserved back-to-back NFL title. A quick little note of some interest (at least to me): the top 3 scoring teams (Strips, Sting, Pelicans) also finished as the top 3 regular season finishers AND the top 3 playoff finishers. That doesn't happen often in the wild world of fantasy football!
Because the same three teams were at the top in nearly every scoring category we start the 2021/22 standings with a large gap between those three and the rest of the league. As a result there were two major noteworthy updates to the all-time league standings. On the heels of their dominant 25 point effort the Strips climbed two spots to 6th overall, and have seen a dramatic turnaround from cellar-dweller to top-half since Brian took ownership of the franchise. But the biggest piece of news is that WE HAVE A NEW LEAGUE LEADER! The Montana Grizzlies have held the mantle as the top team for what seems like an eternity, but an uncharacteristic poor NFL season in Montana and a quality runner-up finish by the Sting has vaulted the original St. Louis team to a narrow lead. As everyone knows, though, the similar end dates to the NHL and NBA seasons create major movement in the standings and things can change at a moment's notice. But, at least for a few months, somebody besides Grant gets to have some bragging rights!
