The contract of any signed player can be released from their contract at any point, but the owner must still pay 25% of the remaining contract in every year remaining on the contract. All fractions are rounded to the nearest $0.25.
Example Ryan Howard's contract before release Year 1 - $12 Year 2 - $8 Year 3 - $5
Ryan Howard's contract after being released Year 1 - $3 Year 2 - $2 Year 3 - $1.25
Contracts of released players are factored in to your overall payroll, even in future seasons if the contract extended more than 1 season. Be wary of this in order not to take too big of a salary cap hit in later seasons

Amendment: Following the Dustin Pedroia incident, teams are not allowed to drop productive, high-level players on expiring contracts at the end of the season for the sole purpose of freeing up cap space for the other sports. I know this is somewhat subjective, but you all know the kind of thing I am talking about. If there are any discrepancies an owner can provide an explanation for the drop, and as long as the reason checks out it will be allowed.
