It has been quite the NFL roller coaster for the Las Vegas Strips the last few years. After securing back-to-back NFL crowns in 2020 and 2021 the Strips fell all the way to 11th place in the 2022 season. Brian obviously didn't like that very much and completed an impressive rebuild that culminated in yet another NFL championship in the 2023 season! For those of you counting at home that makes 3-of-4 years with all but a couple of key players set to return to the lineup in 2024. Don't be surprised to see the Strips at or near the top again next season!
To talk of the NFL season as a whole, this was a 6 team race from start to finish with extreme parity at the top of the league and extreme parity at the bottom of the league with nothing in between. The six playoff teams were separated by just 2 games, with a whopping 4 teams tied at 10-4 for the 2nd best overall record behind the league-leading CNY Clippers. The 7th place team had a 5-9 record illustrating just how large the gap was between the haves and have-nots. This seems to have become a trend in recent seasons as we've seen a similar story play out in other sports the past few seasons. The lack of intrigue leading up to the playoffs has maybe robbed us of some Cinderella stories but it definitely hasn't taken the intrigue out of the playoffs as a whole with every playoff team having a realistic opportunity to win any given week.
With their NFL win the Strips jump out to an early lead in the annual league standings, working to get back on top after relinquishing the crown to the Sting last year. The Clippers regular season championship and runner-up finish keeps them right on Vegas' heels, with DC also not far behind as the league's top scoring team in the regular season. In the all-time standings the Strips are now within striking distance of Montana and Pensacola, who hold the #2 and #3 spots. One more top finish (FYI, the Strips are atop the NHL standings with playoffs just around the corner) could push them on to the podium. They are still a ways behind the top group but CNY is closing in on the Nexus for the #5 spot. The Patriots leapfrog the Canucks in the next tier but the rest of the standings remain pretty stable. As always, look for a lot more movement at the conclusion of the NHL and NBA seasons coming in the next month or so!
Best of luck to those playoff bound teams in the winter sports, and for those of you who won't be in the dance baseball is just around the corner for a fresh start!
