The NFL prospect draft will take place prior to the opening of free agency at the start of each season. The NFL Prospect Draft will be 3 rounds (unless stated otherwise) and each team will have 12 hours to make a selection before their pick is skipped. Draft order is determine by reverse order of the regular season standings for teams that do not make the playoffs, and reverse order of final standings for teams that do make the playoffs.
Any player that has played at least one snap in 7 OR LESS NFL games is eligible to be drafted. A player can be promoted to the NFL roster at any time, but all drafted players MUST be called up at the beginning of the season after they have exceeded their rookie limits (played a snap in 7+ games) or they are released to free agency. Each team is allowed a maximum of 6 "Practice Squad" players. Drafted players can be optioned back to the practice squad at any time as long as they have played a snap in 7 or less games or any time during the first season that they are called up to the NFL roster. Players signed to contracts in free agency are not eligible to be sent to the practice squad at any time.
The following is the contract structure for all drafted players. Contracts do not count towards the salary cap while the player is on the Practice Squad. In addition, the 4 year contract does not begin until the player is promoted. For example, if a player is drafted in 2015 but not promoted until 2018, the owner has control of the player through the 2021 season. A drafted player under contract who is dropped only accrues the 25% debt in the year in which they were released, not future seasons. Drafted players can be released between seasons during the drop period with no 25% cap hit without using the allotted free contract drops.
