The NHL prospect draft will take place prior to the opening of free agency at the start of each season. The NHL Prospect draft will be 3 rounds (unless stated otherwise) and each team will have 12 hours to make a selection before their pick is skipped. Draft order is determine by reverse order of the regular season standings for teams that do not make the playoffs, and reverse order of final standings for teams that do make the playoffs.
Any player that has played less than 1,100 minutes at the NHL level is eligible to be drafted. A drafted player can be promoted at any time but MUST be called up at the beginning of the season after they have exceeded their rookie limits. Each team is allowed a maximum of 8 players on the "Juniors" roster. Drafted players can be optioned back to the practice squad at any time as long as they have played in less than 30 games, or any time during the first season in which they are promoted to the NHL roster. Players signed to contracts in free agency are not eligible to be sent to the Juniors at any time.
The following is the contract structure for all drafted players. Contracts do not count towards the salary cap while the player is on the Juniors. In addition, the 5 year contract does not begin until the player is promoted. For example, if a player is drafted in 2015 but not promoted until 2018, the owner has control of the player through the 2022 season. A drafted player under contract who is dropped only accrues the 25% debt in the year in which they were released, not future seasons. Drafted players can be released between seasons during the drop period with no 25% cap hit without using the allotted free contract drops.
