Rather than judge what the qualifying offer should be based on average salary I propose that the qualifying offer should be based on the highest yearly salary in the original contract. This means that younger players on backloaded contracts will continue to become more expensive (as RFA is intended to do).
For example, the current average salary of the 4 year contract for NFL players drafted in the 1st round is $20. A 40% increase from that would only be $28, but the player would have made $32 in the final year of their original contract.
