Free agents will be bid on in this site, not through the respective ESPN league sites. A player can be signed for a maximum of 5 years for any amount the team owner sees fit, as long as they stay within their salary cap. An example free agent bid would be as follows:
The St. Louis Sting place a bid on Adam Wainwright for 3 years
Year 1 - $25
Year 2 - $20
Year 3 - $16
As you can see, the amount a player is signed for can vary from year to year. If you want to pay an older player more at the beginning of his contract than the end, you can go ahead and do that. However, the winning bidder will be the one who offers the highest AVERAGE annual salary. Any one-year offer must be 1.2x times greater than the average of any multi-year offer submitted to a player. In the event that there is a tie in value after factoring in the 1.2x rule, the bid that was submitted first is given priority (as the two would be considered equal). All multi-year offers are considered the same. For example, a 5 year contract with an AAV of $5 is NOT greater than a 3 year contract with an AAV of $5.
Only players currently in ESPN's universe and on the major league roster are eligible to be bid on. Owners cannot bid on players that are not in the ESPN universe.
A player is won after no bids have been placed on them for a period of 24 hours. After the 24 window is up, the final (highest) bidder wins that player for whatever they were offered and can immediately add them to their team roster. If a team is the highest bidder on a player and does not have room for that player on their roster, they have another 24 hours to make a spot for the player or they will fall to the next highest bidder. If there was not another bidder the player falls back into the free agent pool.
