Hey all, with our NBA draft going on right now it’s gotten me thinking about potential improvements. One that is at the forefront for me right now is the possibility of changing our league’s prospect eligibility rules. As currently constructed it is nearly impossible to draft a long-term prospect and allow them time to become useful NBA players before we are forced to either cut them or waste a real NBA roster spot (and the cheap years of a rookie contract) while they continue to develop.
This stems from the NBA tendency to allow rookies to play severely limited minutes, but in nearly every game. For that reason, I am thinking it may make more sense to base our prospect eligibility on “minutes played” rather than “games played”. Some initial research into past seasons tells me that a minutes limit of 1500 to retain prospect eligibility seems reasonable. In most seasons there are 10-15 rookies that play at least 1500 minutes, while the rest would retain prospect eligibility.
I believe that having it be so difficult to hold on to these types of prospects goes against the goals of a dynasty-type league such as this. Since our 2020 prospect draft has already started this proposal would go into effect starting with players drafted in the 2021 prospect draft and beyond. Please feel free to add any comments/suggestions/improvements you see fit for further discussion

I agree completely. I hated losing Goga this year and drafted Bam 2 years ago before but couldn’t keep him with the way it is set up and look at him now would love to have him back on my roster.

I think this would be a positive move to better the league.

I agree with that. Makes sense.
Will you expand the D-League roster as well?

I like the idea but like James; would the D-League get bigger and maybe an extra round

I like the idea but like James; would the D-League get bigger and maybe an extra round I would not expect an additional round added to the draft. It is already difficult enough to find worthwhile players at the end of our draft, and having some surprise useful players show up in free agency is a good thing. As for a potential D-League expansion, that is something that would be more likely. I would not expect to expand the D-League in the short term, but if we see multiple teams running into issues we can consider a small expansion (1-2 added spots) in the future.

I have been looking into implementing something similar to this for NHL prospects starting with the 2021 Prospect Draft given the limited role that younger players can have on an NHL roster, many times averaging only 10-12 minutes per game when breaking into the league.
My research shows me that the cutoff for the top 10% of rookie eligible NHL players in terms of minutes played in any given season typically ranges from 900-1100 minutes. I believe that altering the rookie criteria to 1100 career NHL minutes would be a better eligibility marker than simply Games Played. This would go into effect starting with this coming prospect draft, if the league believes this is a positive change as the NBA proposal was viewed.
Let me know your thoughts, please

Hmm, I think I'm actually less inclined to do this for hockey than basketball, largely because I see it as less of a problem because most NHL teams will slow drop guys in anyway. The NHL has a limit on the number of games players can play without pushing them to restricted free agency early, so young guys might get a taste but really aren't thrown in until they are more "ready." There's also a more traditional minor league system like baseball has where guys can be optioned.
I don't think NBA and NHL are apples to apples. My two cents anyway.

Think about the baseball rule, it's 130 AB 50 IP, not games played on rookie status. Suppose we move baseball to games played. 60 for hitters and 15 for pitchers. Just doesn't make sense to me.
Hockey, Basketball, Football are games played. Moving Hockey and Basketball to minutes would be a move toward the baseball rule, which as I had posted before, I think is a positive move to better the league.
Either way we decide to move will be fine with me.
(Football - snaps played instead of minutes?)

I like this idea, never liked the games played rule where a guy could average 8-9 minutes accumulate very little stats but went over the rookie limits
