The conclusion of the 2021 MLB season also marked the close of the 4-Sport League's 7th year. While still not fully back to normal following the COVID pandemic (NHL and NBA played shortened schedules) we did see some return to normalcy in the world of sports, and thus in the 4-Sport League as well. The Pelicans continued their run of dominance in MLB, winning their 4th World Series. Incredibly, there have only been two franchises to win our World Series with Pensacola having 4 and Syracuse with the remaining 3. It's safe to say that those franchises have cemented themselves as the cream of the crop on the diamond.
The Pelicans used their dual regular- and post-season championships to vault up the league 2020/21 season standings, but it wasn't enough to overtake the top spot on the year. The Sting entered the MLB season with a slim lead over the Warriors and actually managed to remain competitive for most of the season despite expectations of a rebuilding year. In the end, though, the playoffs were not meant to be and a typically solid (even if not quite as dominant as usual) MLB season catapulted them into the top spot...... But then the Strips, who entered the MLB season with a double-digit deficit on the Sting and Warriors, come flying in out of nowhere and finish the MLB season as the runners-up to the Pelicans to go along with a great regular season and strong statistical performance. This actually pushed the Strips into a tie with Syracuse for the top spot, and for the first time in league history we ended a season with co-champions!
As expected, the Grizzlies maintained their lead in the all-time standings but Syracuse's victory over the Sting on the diamond has now moved these two original league members into a tie for 2nd place and within striking distance of Montana. The Pelicans took flight from the middle of the pack all the way up to 4th place, though that middle tier of Pensacola, Dallas, New York, New Jersey, and the resurgent Strips all remain relatively close and quite a ways back from the top tier. On the back end, the Stars and Patriots used playoff-caliber seasons to increase the gap between them and the last-place Wings, actually passing the Dawgs on their way out of the cellar.
This report is written already over 1/4 of the way through the 2021 NFL season, with the NHL having just dropped the puck and NBA set to tip off next week with a return to the typical 82 game seasons. The hope and expectation is that we get full seasons from all of the sports from here until eternity. As always, thank you all for your commitment, activity, and camaraderie to make this (in my very biased opinion) one of the most fun free leagues a person can join. Good luck to you all this new season!
